Annual Hand Washing Event: On February 20th, Health Careers Club took a trip to Lower Gwynedd Elementary School to teach kindergartners how to properly wash their hands. Each kindergarten class rotated between four stations. In these stations, the kids colored, watched videos, listened to books, and were actually able to see the germs on their hands with a UV light. After going through all four stations, the kindergartners now knew how to properly wash their hands and for how long. They also learned where bacteria comes from and why they need to wash their hands in order to get rid of it.
February 2020 Meeting: Happy National Heart Month! In honor of National Heart Month, we focused our meeting around AEDs and how to use them. After a presentation and Kahoot, each table was given a training AED in order to practice using an AED. In addition, we split members into teams for a scavenger hunt. The first team to take a picture of all 6 AEDs around the school and come back was given a special Valentine's Day prize. Make sure you attend our monthly meetings so you can take part in these activities!
February 2020 Guest Speaker Event : On February 6th, Jill Kelly came to speak to Health Careers Club about Occupational Therapy. This event was extremely interactive, as she showed our club a few of the tools used in Occupational Therapy. For example, she brought in tools that people may need to help get there clothes on and utensils for those who struggle to grip things such as forks and knives. She also brought in things such as special glasses to show us how some people may see with special conditions, along with how she helps them to overcome those obstacles. In this meeting, we learned a lot about how Occupational Therapy works and what it's used for.
January 2020 Meeting: We had a great first meeting of 2020! We learned how to safely put on and take off PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). Members learned how to correctly put on gloves, gowns, and masks, as well as how to take them off without getting germs or bacteria on them. We also discussed upcoming events such as our handwashing event at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School. Members have the opportunity to spend about an hour and a half at our elementary school to teach kindergartners correct handwashing techniques. If you're a member of HCC and you're interested in attending this event, please notify an HCC officer or Ms. Jarvis (Room D24).
December 2019 Guest Speaker Event: On December 5th, Dr. Brasher came to WHS to speak to HCC about her job as a veterinarian. Dr. Brasher travels to houses in order to treat people's pets without them having to go to a facility. In her presentation with the club, she discussed how she came upon her profession, a general description of what she does, and tips for those of us aspiring to work in the medical force.
November 2019 Meeting: At our November meeting, Brian Hassall (a senior at WHS) explained to us what graduation project is and how we can help him with it. Brian will be implementing a program called Catch My Breath into health classes, which will discuss awareness of vaping and the dangers of it. Although the health teachers will be teaching the lessons, he needs us to be participants in small group activities in order to keep students engaged and enthusiastic. If you are interesting in being a peer facilitator in one of these lessons, please stop by Ms. Jarvis's room (D24), talk to a HCC officer, or speak with Brian Hassall.
October 2019 Meeting: For those who missed our October meeting, we discussed Red Ribbon Week and the Blood Drive. Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31, and we will be collecting signed ribbons that you can pick up in Ms. Jarvis's room (D24). For 20 ribbons, you will receive one club credit. Additionally, if you create a poster for Red Ribbon Week, you will also receive one credit. Our fall Blood Drive is also coming up on November 7th! If you get 5 sign ups, you will receive one credit. We also have a speaker coming on October 24th to discuss the Blood Drive and the information that you need to know if you are volunteering. Our goal is 120 sign ups, which would equal 100 pints of blood!
September 2019 Meeting: Our first meeting was a success! Our introductory meeting included our description of Health Careers Club, a Kahoot, and pizza! For those who missed the meeting, we explained to new members that 7 credits are needed for the club, but 3 credits need to be completed by Winter Break. Although credits can be gained through going to meetings, members can also get credit with other activities throughout the year, such as the Blood Drive and Red Ribbon Week. There is also a $5,00 fee that needs to be given to an officer or Ms. Jarvis as soon as possible. In our future meetings, we'll be talking about events coming up and different health careers in the health field that might interest you!
